UNICEF, The United Nations Fund for Children
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
In all of its work, UNICEF takes a life-cycle based approach, recognizing the particular importance of early childhood development and adolescence. UNICEF programmes focus on the most disadvantaged children, including those living in fragile contexts, those with disabilities, those who are affected by rapid urbanization and those affected by environmental degradation.
UNICEF was created with a distinct purpose in mind: to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. We advocate for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper care at the youngest age forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future.
We promote girls’ education – ensuring that they complete primary education as a minimum – because it benefits all children, both girls and boys. Girls who are educated grow up to become better thinkers, better citizens, and better parents to their own children. We act so that all children are immunized against common childhood diseases, and are well nourished: no child should suffer or die from a preventable illness. We work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people because it is right to keep them from harm and enable them to protect others. We help children and families affected by HIV/AIDS to live their lives with dignity.
We involve everyone in creating protective environments for children. We are present to relieve suffering during emergencies, and wherever children are threatened, because no child should be exposed to violence, abuse or exploitation.
UNICEF upholds the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular. We work for the Millennium Development Goals and for the progress promised in the United Nations Charter. We strive for peace and security. We work to hold everyone accountable to the promises made for children.
We are part of the Global Movement for Children – a broad coalition dedicated to improving the life of every child. Through this movement, and events such as the United Nations Special Session on Children, we encourage young people to speak out and participate in the decisions that affect their lives.
South Sudan
More than 3.75 million children are at risk.
Months of conflict in the young country of South Sudan has placed 7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance - half of them children. The fighting has forced more than 1.5 million people to flee their homes, and many are living out in the open without protection from heat or severe rains.
Nepal
Two devastating earthquakes in Nepal in just three weeks have claimed thousands of lives and causing immense destruction in the capital city of Kathmandu and surrounding areas. More than 1 million children need immediate humanitarian assistance.
Ebola
With the West African Ebola epidemic over, you might think our work is done.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Ebola has taken a dramatic toll on Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone
Syria
7.5 million Syrian children, inside and outside the country, are in need of humanitarian aid, and millions have borne witness to unrelenting violence from the brutal conflict that began more than four years ago. 2.6 million children are no longer in school
Innovation
Innovation is vital to the state of the world's children. Challenges have never been larger, or coming faster – urbanization, climate change, lack of employment opportunities, broken education systems, increased disparities and digital divides.
Nutrition
Proper nutrition is a powerful good: people who are well nourished are more likely to be healthy, productive and able to learn. Good nutrition benefits families, their communities and the world as a whole.
Undernutrition is, by the same logic, devastating. It blunts the intellect, saps the productivity of everyone it touches and perpetuates poverty
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
Children's rights to an adequate standard of living and to the highest attainable standard of health are enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The fulfilment of these rights is the ultimate goal of UNICEF's water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes.
Protection
All children have the right to be protected from violence, exploitation and abuse. Yet, millions of children worldwide from all socio-economic backgrounds, across all ages, religions and cultures suffer violence, exploitation and abuse every day. Millions more are at risk.
Education
Education is one of UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action. At UNICEF, we see access to quality education as a right that should be sustained for all children – both girls and boys – under the most difficult of circumstances.
Social Integration
Child poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon and can be measured in many ways. It is imperative that governments make a commitment to child poverty reduction, recognizing and responding to child poverty is the first priority, alongside building expertise and improved approaches to child poverty measurement.
HIV / AIDS
Our Vision
UNICEF's vision for a AIDS-free generation is that all children and their families are protected from HIV infection and live free from AIDS
Health
Improving the health of children is one responsibility among many in the fight against poverty. Healthy children become healthy adults: people who create better lives for themselves, their communities and their countries.
Improving the health of the world's children is a core UNICEF objective.
UNICEF has established a global Office of Research to provide leadership for its strategic research agenda around children
In 1988 the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) established in Florence, Italy, a research centre to support its advocacy for children worldwide and to identify and research current and future areas of UNICEF’s work. The prime objectives of the Office of Research are to improve international understanding of issues relating to children’s rights, and to help facilitate full implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child supporting advocacy worldwide. The Office aims to set out a comprehensive framework for research and knowledge within the organization in support of its global programmes and policies.
